Washington, DC – May is always full of exciting happenings, not just at DPR, but nationwide!  On a national scale, May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month and National Water Safety Month – which coincides perfectly with the opening of our outdoor Aquatics Centers.  For DPR, the month of May means that our outdoor pools will open on Memorial Day Weekend for the summer; the Annual DC Senior Games, now in it’s 29th year, are held in May; the Agency will begin to prepare for the One City Summer Fun Kick Off Event; as well as the many events that take place in our Program Divisions and Recreation Centers.  In a way, May is DPR’s “kick-off month” – a time where we begin to offer a “sneak peek” into the great events that will take place in the summer months.

May is also an exciting time at DPR because the Agency is kicking off a new initiative that will not only become the new slogan of DPR, but it has become an approach that will be incorporated in DPR programs, events and outreach. DPR is proud to announce the launch of “Move • Grow • Be Green with DPR”.  “Move • Grow • Be Green with DPR” is an initiative that encourages everyone – children, adults, teen and seniors - to Move through Physical Fitness • Grow through Personal Enrichment and • Be Green through Environment & Sustainability.  Move • Grow • Be Green allows DPR to continue to focus on our mission and to ensure that the Agency is aligned with the initiatives that are set forth by the National Recreation and Parks Association.

DPR’s Move initiative is focused on fitness and healthy living, an area of DPR that most of our constituents are familiar with.  DPR’s Move includes our sports programs, fencing, tennis, skate boarding, swimming, line dancing, zumba and healthy living.  The week of May 7th will be dedicated to focusing on Move events and activities.

DPR’s Grow initiative speaks to personal enrichment - and this is for all ages, from our youngest to our oldest residents.  DPR’s Grow includes programs like Teen Programs, Arts & Crafts, Book Clubs, College Prep Classes & Tours, our ‘Young Ladies on the Rise’ and ‘Sew and Know’ programs and Supreme Teens.  The week of May 14th will be dedicated to focusing on Grow events and activities.

DPR’s Be Green initiative is about environmental stewardship.  This is in line with the sustainable DC efforts and really working to make sure that Parks & Recreation can contribute to ensuring that DC is a sustainable city.  DPR’s Be Green includes the environmental education classes with UDC, DPR community gardens, Ward 8 Parks Committee, Green Buds Camps for kids, and our several beehives across the city.   The week of May 21st will be dedicated to focusing on Be Green events and activities. “Move • Grow • Be Green with DPR” is also proud to kick off during National Physical Fitness & Sports Month - ensuring that DC Residents are living healthy, productive lifestyles is key to what this initiative is all about.

For the 29th year in a row, DPR will host the Annual Senior Games, an event that began in 1983 with a goal of providing seniors with meaningful recreation and physical activities that promote healthy living for a longer, more robust life.  The DPR Summer 2012 Outdoor Pools Opening Weekend will also take place with a Kickoff Press Event showcasing the newly renovated Rosedale Aquatics Center for the first time.  Outdoor Pools will be open the entire Memorial Day weekend from 12 pm to 6 pm.

With so many great events, programs and workshops happening - make sure that you  “Move • Grow • Be Green with DPR”  in the month of May. And remember, this is only a glimpse of the many activities and programs being held at DPR centers and facilities during the month of May - and year round!!

To find more information on DPR events and programs - visit any DC Department of Parks and Recreation center, contact DPR at (202) 673–7647 or visit us on the web at www.DPR.DC.gov.
